Just a guess here, but history probably wasn't the favorite subject of Keith Foulke or Johnny from Burger King.

The answer is Sparky Lyle, the lefthander who got most of the last calls from 1969-71 before being dealt to the Yankees for first baseman Danny Cater in one of the most lopsided trades in Sox history.

Since Reardon's departure, the Sox have had 10 saves leaders in the last dozen seasons entering this one. You can probably recite the names: Foulke, Byung Hyun Kim, Ugueth Urbina, Derek Lowe, Tim Wakefield, Tom Gordon, Heathcliff Slocumb, Rick Aguilera, Jeff Russell, and Ken Ryan. That doesn't even count cameo appearances by the likes of Dennis Eckersley and Rod Beck. Of that group, only Wakefield remains with the Sox, as a starter. Kim (Rockies) and Lowe (Dodgers) are now starters, Gordon (Yankees) and Urbina (Phillies) are setup men, and the others have long since abandoned this line of work.

Beck had four 30-save seasons in a row for the Giants and Cubs before his elbow betrayed him. So did Billy Koch, for the Blue Jays and A's, but last June he was demoted as closer by the White Sox, just two years after posting 44 saves for the A's, was released by the Marlins last October, and by the Jays this past March, and is out of baseball at age 30, his fastball having abandoned him.

Foulke is among a group of 13 relievers who have had as many as four 30-save seasons since '95, but of that group, only eight are still closing: Hoffman, Percival, Rivera, Jose Mesa (6), Billy Wagner (5), Armando Benítez (4), and Jason Isringhausen (4).

In most cases, those numbers would scream that an injury is involved. But Foulke and the Sox insist that is not the case. Counting the postseason, Foulke had the heaviest workload of his career in 2004, under the most pressure-filled circumstances that he has experienced. It appears that might have come with a hefty price tag.

Record not a hit with Baylor
Former Red Sox reliever Byung Hyun Kim played a small part in baseball history last week when he hit Craig Biggio of the Astros in the elbow with a fastball, the 268th time Biggio has been hit in his career, a major league record.

Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek entered Friday batting a league-leading .411 against lefthanded pitchers. Only three players this decade have hit .400 or better against lefties: Ichiro Suzuki (.404 in 2004), Milton Bradley (.402 in 2003), and Bret Boone (.444 in 2001). Manny Ramírez hit .407 against lefties in 1995 while playing for the Indians, a reminder of how baffling it is that he's hitting .176 against lefties this season.

Former Red Sox reliever Byung Hyun Kim played a small part in baseball history last week when he hit Craig Biggio of the Astros in the elbow with a fastball, the 268th time Biggio has been hit in his career, a major league record.

Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek entered Friday batting a league-leading .411 against lefthanded pitchers. Only three players this decade have hit .400 or better against lefties: Ichiro Suzuki (.404 in 2004), Milton Bradley (.402 in 2003), and Bret Boone (.444 in 2001). Manny Ramírez hit .407 against lefties in 1995 while playing for the Indians, a reminder of how baffling it is that he's hitting .176 against lefties this season.
